The July 2012 edition of Concrete magazine, the magazine of The Concrete Society, carries an article about one of our recent contracts for Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering. The job involved pumping concrete over the River Nene and the Northampton Arm of the Grand Union Canal to form bases for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge – part of the Northampton Connect2 cycle network.
Due to the sensitive nature of the site, Balfour Beatty put in place a number of measures to minimise the work’s impact on the environment. These included measures to ensure that the construction process would not interfere with the family of otters that use the river as a home. Camfaud, following Balfour Beatty’s lead, aimed to minimise damage to the environment by:
-
supplying a long stroking Putzmeister BSF 63.16H pump – long stroking equates to more efficiency and less noise
-
checking the integrity of the concrete placing boom pipes and pipeline seals prior to the pour
-
using solvent free, biodegradable mould oil to oil up the hopper
